Standard features: "Kentucky Star" is a 1971 Gulfstar Salon Pilothouse Motoersailor and is one of five hulls produced by the Gulfstar Cororation of St Petersburg, FL. The vessel is rather unique in the she sports a trawler design with the expansive room layout of a trawler, but has a sloop rig which offers either motoring, ailing or motorsailing possibilities. The vessel came new from St Petersburg, FL and shipped to Washington State to the original owner for her first 10 years of ownership. Then the vessel was moved to Texas via the Panama Canal on her own bottom where she was sold to the second owner for the next 11 years of ownership. She was then moved to Florida were she was sold to the third owner and eventually ended up on the Tennessee River in northern Alabama and become a liveaboard for a couple until 1996 when the present owners bought her and moved her to Kentucky Dam Marina ( mile 22 of the Tennessee River) where she is still berthed. The vessel has had many improvements since first constructed through knowledgeable ownerships. The cockpit is quite large and has a custom aluminum hardtop installed. Dinghy davits have been added to the transom and the transom has a teak swim platform which is unusual for a sailboat design. The side decks are quite wide with safe access to the fordeck and ground tackle with dual anchor rollers. A large hardtop over the salon area allows for easy mailsail handling and there is roller furling on the headsail with the sheets leading aft to the cockpit. There is also wheel steering from either the salon or the aft cockpit. The large salon is very room and only one step up from the aft cockpit area and had had improvements of new carpet, dual recliner chairs, helm chair, television and stero added in the past few years. The inside steering station with all controls and electronics is to starboard. The salon is well lighted with surrounding opening windows with new Phifertex window covering in 2011. Forward and down only three steps is the galley area to port which also had had remodeling in 2009 with new paint, refrigeration, sink and countertops with drop-down extension leaf. There is a two burner alcohol stove along with a microwave. Across from the galley is a large head area with shower stall and the manual head being replaced in 2009 with an electric head. Of course hot and cold running water throughout the vessel. Forward is the usual V-berth configuration with drawer and closet storage, and lots of storage space under the V-berth. In the forepeak is the anchor rode locker access door for dual anchor setup. The vessel is heated and cooled by a Mermaid marine reverse cycle heat and air conditioner. There is plenty of storage in the bilge area and the engine can be accessed thru two salon floor hatches. Axillary propulsion is provided by a four-cylinder For Lehman 80 hp diesel engine which can easily power the vessel to her hull speed of around 8.5 mph driving a three blade propeller thru a Paragon transmission. In the bilge area is plenty of room for spare parts and engine fluids along with personal storage. Both AC and DC power is onboard with a new Heart Interface 2000 watt inverter installed in 2011 by the present owners. The vessel's exterior was completely painted with Imron paint in 20008 along with all new headsail and mainsail canvas. While not many of these models were produced, she is a real head turner in any marina and rarely does anyone walk by without having to ask "Who built this boat?". A very comfortable and unique sailing/motoring vessel for today's modern boater.
